THE MINI WIDOW REPORT
By.

Kathy Formosa.

I am sure everyone has heard of GOLFING WIDOWS – Wives and partners of men whose passion is golf. Well, I considered myself to be a MINI-ING WIDOW, and I bet there are a few others who can identify with that.

When Tony first bought his Mini 5 years ago, it was me who encouraged him to take up a hobby. Little did I know what that would mean. The tinkering under the bonnet soon became full on almost to the point of passion for his little baby and divorce for me.

When he couldn’t sleep at night he would be in the garage fixing something. When I was going to bed he would be up ‘in just a minute’. Many a weekend I would wake up in an empty bed to the sound of tinkering and quite often swearing from the garage.

I found it very difficult at times to have a sensible conversation with him, especially if his mind was on something like how to stop the engine from overheating.

I don’t know anything about cars, but it didn’t take long for Tony to call me when he needed a hand, especially if he dropped a screw or bolt on the garage floor or in the engine bay. I got used to him calling me to ‘bring my glasses, love’. I even had to bring home a front seat from Ipswich Wreckers when I was working out that way, thank goodness I picked the right one.

Now he is involved in the MOCQ he spends almost as much time on the phone as he does on his little car – and even less time with me! The new clubs outings mean getting out of bed early and trying to fit everything in that little boot, before squeezing my poor old bones into a space smaller than my fridge. Many of my weekend plans have been changed because Tony has a Mini Show that he just has to attend.

When Tony decided to start up his own small business, he told me he might sell the Mini.

YOU KNOW WHAT? – I’M GLAD HE DIDN’T.

I hate to admit it, but I love that little car almost as much as he does. I now find myself talking to strangers about it and noticing every Mini on the road. I love the way people look and smile when they see us in it.

Tony and I have met a lot of people through the Club and hopefully have made a few good friends as well.

We BOTH look forward to many happy MINI-ING years – we can’t play golf anyway!

Kathy.
