The Mini Mag

Volume 1 Number 3 May 1999.

The Presidents Report.

Another month has passed and what great support the Club has received from it’s members. We passed the 100 membership mark in the middle of May and our goal now is to reach 150 by the time we celebrate the Mini 40. The events organised for the month drew big numbers with over 70 Minis showing up for the Mac’s Mini Spares Family Fun Day, the Macleans Bridge Run attracted 15 cars, despite the weather and change of venue to a shopping centre car park, and 35 people enjoyed the Mini Blitz at the Bulimba Coffee Bar on Sunday the 23rd.

The Mini 40 plans are fast taking shape thanks to the hard working committee. As you can imagine there is still a lot of work to be done. We are looking for members who have access to trucks, tents or marques, tables, chairs etc. We will also need a lot of volunteers on the big day.

Club badges and shirts are being produced at the moment and you can order by picking up the order form at the next monthly meeting. The prices are very reasonable and the quality high.

If you are into collecting Model Minis, as I am, you will be interested in the shop I found at Wynnum. Gateway Models is at 238 Tingal Road, opposite Mac’s Mini Spares, and they have wall to wall models, a lot of which are Minis. They have all the popular models, the variants, the rare and even a Moke with a parachute. The Army were going to use the Moke as an airborne vehicle, which was to be pushed out the back of a transport aircraft and parachuted down with the para-troopers. Mark Paget has agreed to his Moke being used for such a demo on the Mini 40 day.

If you are a model collector and want to swap, sell or buy give me a call. If you are a collector of the real thing, a few bargains can be found on the market at the moment. A couple of 1275 disc brake models for \\$1500 - $ 2000 and non running Clubmans for around $500, good for the do it yourself enthusiast. Good Deluxes are also around and they make great restoration projects. The 1275 LS remains the dark horse and is still eagerly sought after by collectors.

Don’t forget the new venue for the monthly meetings, the Upper Mt Gravatt Scout Hall. See you there for a chat at the BBQ before the meeting.

Yours in minis.
Glen Carpenter.
